R U OK Day is one of these inescapable digital phenomena that was founded to normalise conversations about mental health to help prevent suicide. The movement’s honorable and genuine intentions have attracted a growing body of interest and support and is now recognised across the globe. 

There’s a massive amount of marketing energy that goes into sharing the message, that conversations about mental health should be normal. Individuals and businesses alike take part, posting images across social media platforms to show their support. 

Social betterment is the desired outcome 

but 

is the biggest effect, in reality, the realisation that no one is actually asking “are you okay?” 

This year there were an abundance of posts, but the disconnect between the virtual world and reality meant that no one I knew actually started a real conversation.
